Northern Ireland’s first lifestyle care home and 2018 Northern Ireland Care home of the Year, Milesian Manor, Magherafelt, opened its doors one year ago to praise and applause from the local community. Boasting a bar, a spa, a café, cinema, wellness garden and a calendar packed with activities from yoga to mindfulness, the impressive care home promised a new and exciting home where people could live their formative years, with first-class nursing care whilst living life to the max.
Seaneen McErlane, Activities Co-ordinator at Milesian Manor says residents are leading full and active lives with lots of fun, family and friends;
“Our aim at Milesian Manor, whilst obviously providing the absolute best care available was to always provide our residents with the opportunity to continue to live and experience life and all the wonderful things it has to offer. We make a special effort to try new things and engage with the local community regularly, I can see many of or residents being more active, more engaged and really smiling more through this interaction with others. We’re very proud of what we have achieved in our first year and look forward to lots more!
Seaneen goes on explain;
“Community involvement is vital and at Milesian Manor we are proud to say we’ve had 150 visits from volunteers who have enjoyed spending time with our residents and taking part in a range of projects, these have included everything from quilt making, to knitting for charities or singing and decorating with young children and even skill swapping with older teenagers. In fact, inter-generational activities stand out with our residents having taken part in 65 projects throughout the year, these are certainly some of the most effective projects we deliver.
Socially, residents are encouraged to enjoy time with friends and family and at Milesian Manor they know how to throw a good party;
“Our residents have celebrated 65 birthdays, that’s a lot of cake! We’ve also planned 51 parties and there has been 365 batches of the now famous Milesian shortbread created for residents and their visitors to enjoy, the kitchen has been busy and have created a staggering 47,085 meals and organised 61 afternoon teas in the Mixing Bowl Café. Some of our residents also love nothing more than to enjoy a little tipple and we’ve counted up 62 times where some of our ladies and gents have enjoyed time in the Greyhound Bar over a drink – just like old times!”
Pampering and preening is one sure fire way to make yourself feel good residents are no different, with 832 blow drys in the salon and 156 spa sessions, these ladies really know how to look after themselves!
“The ladies love to come in for a blow dry, a set or a trim and we also make sure their nails are manicured and their makeup is done. Feeling good about how you look is a basic human need and it’s something we feel is so important all through our lives, no matter what age you are! Practising self-care and encouraging pampering is a fantastic way to promote independence through better physical care, and it’s not only for ladies, our gents really make the most out of our spa area too, I see the residents really brighten up when they’ve been pampered – don’t we all!”
Residents are encouraged to spend time together and with their families in the communal areas and not feel tied to their own rooms, residents have enjoyed watching over 312 movies in the cinema, taken part in 52 mindfulness sessions and listened to and sang along with 47 live music events.
But as Seaneen goes on to explain, it’s not all about the activity;
“We all need quiet time, no matter our age and we relish our residents taking time to reflect and spend time alone with their thoughts, we have a wonderful wellness garden where they enjoy sitting in the sunshine or taking a walk, we’ve counted 104 of these! We’re also very lucky to have a total of 9 amazing Pets as Therapy dogs who have visited an incredible 52 times!
